My son, Duncan was 5 years old when diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We have been with Prof Segal from the first day of diagnoses. Now 7 years later, we are still with the best diabetes care team! They have been our pillar of strength from the very first day! I really dont know how I would have coped without Prof Segal, Annie & Alet! I have learned so much from them, and still do! I am a proud supporter of TEAM SEGAL!!

On the 28th of January 2009, I received a call from my children's GP that my four year old son Zaahir's blood sugar level was 41 and we urgently needed to take him to the Centre for Diabetes. That is when our journey started with Prof Segal, Jinty, previously Bev and now Alet. At one of our first meeting's with Prof Segal he showed us a train track and told us that the idea is to make the train track grow longer. Ours is a journey of 3 monthly visits, talks (and reprimands L) about highs and lows, guidance on how to work out how much insulin you will need on holiday, requests for additional supplies, help with a gluten free diet and support all throughout. There are days when we are nervous going to the rooms especially when we have to see Prof Segal because the team always pushes for us to be on track. In this journey of making this train track longer, we are grateful for Prof Segal and his team and always will beβ¦

I'll never forget the 1 Feb 2016, my friend (who has a T1D daughter) took Lala's BG level and asked if I would mind if she calls Prof Segal's rooms? She said to me, "I just spoke to them, they said you must put her in the car and go there right now." I've been at the Donny Gordon many times, but as I reversed from her driveway, I couldn't remember how to get there, a slow panic was getting hold of me. I was waiting for my husband's plane to land from Cape Town, I didn't want to face this alone, but was told I couldn't wait any longer, we should go straight away. The kindness and understanding as I walked into Prof Segal's rooms didn't take the panic away, but I remember the warmth I felt. My head was spinning (it was spinning for many weeks afterwards), but Alet knew this and was so calm and gentle, not only with me, but she was incredible with Lala. Giving her those first insulin injections, I don't even think I was able to look.... The quickest/best testimonial to Prof Segal and his entire team: we are moving to Cape Town and we are not changing doctors! I'd rather fly up every 3 months. I know they're just a phone call away and available 24/7. Personally I don't think we'll get the care and understanding anywhere else....
